Interreg IV Project GeORG explores the geological potential of the deep Upper Rhine Graben

The Upper Rhine Graben with its complex geological history presents multiple opportunities for the use of its geopotential, which have increasingly attracted professional and public interest, especially in the scope of the discussion on climate change. Possible uses include among others deep geothermal energy production, CO2 sequestration and the storage of compressed air.

In the framework of the European project dubbed GeORG and financed by the Interreg IV Upper Rhine program from October 2008 to December 2012, partners from Switzerland, France and Germany prepared data on the geological structure of the Rhine Graben and made them available to professionals as well as the interested public.
